This is a story about a family. Shi Jie is a foreman in a state-owned factory and his wife works in a pig slaughterhouse. Their teenager girl loves playing basketball and hanging out with her friends at the expense of studying. They live with his mother in a small house next to the train tracks. Money is tight but they are happy. Then on his birthday he learns that the factory is shutting down, leaving all the workers unemployed. While his family waits for him at his birthday banquet, he goes out drinking with his crew. At the end of the night, the widowed mother-in-law announces that she has fallen in love and plans to marry. The husband returns home the next day but hides the bad news from his family. He lies for the next two months and looks for a job everywhere in the city. When the truth is revealed, the family struggles to remain intact.
